  • Longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas retiring – CNN.com

    June 7th, 2010 [Middle East]

Longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas retiring – CNN.com.

Wow. I had no idea. Does she realize that many Jews never left Israel, or never left the Middle East, or did not move to Israel from Europe but from Africa or Asia, or that Germany and Poland were never our true home? We were always from the Middle East. When we were in Europe, most people there hoped we would go back to where we came from, if not simply perish. So to say we should “go back to Germany/Poland” is to completely misunderstand the Jewish people as a whole. I don’t know if “Go back to Africa” is really an accurate analogy; that would be closer if she had said Jews should get out of America and go back to Israel. A better analogy would be if a community of freed slaves – or even their ancestors today – returned to their homes in Africa only to be told to “Go back to Virginia.”

Iran ready to protect Gaza-bound ships – UPI.com.

Faaaantastic. So now Iran gets to do what it’s been DYING to do for years, with an excuse that makes it look like it’s not the aggressor. If Iran hadn’t been supporting Hamas financially and militarily all this time, perhaps there wouldn’t be a need for a blockade in the first place.

Iran Red Crescent to send aid to Gaza – CNN.com

Iran Red Crescent to send aid to Gaza – CNN.com.

If I never hear the word “flotilla” again it will be too soon. If Israel wouldn’t allow ships from a friendly nation to break the blockade, what makes them think it’s going to allow “aid” from Iran without inspection? Doesn’t Gaza get enough “aid” from Iran through its underground tunnels? In any event, Hamas has alrea…dy announced that it is holding all flotilla aid itself hostage by refusing to allow it into the country unless Israel meets demands. All that aid from those other ships is just sitting there because Hamas refuses to touch it.

Ex-president of Israel blasts legal ‘lynching’ after rape indictment – CNN.com

March 12th, 2009 [General, Middle East, News]

Ex-president of Israel blasts legal ‘lynching’ after rape indictment – CNN.com.

“The attorney general, the state prosecutor’s office, the police, politicians and journalists have shed my blood daily. For 32 months my rights and my honor have been trampled on and the lynching will not stop.”

K, I don’t know much about this guy, but it seems to me that a right-wing Israeli politician being accused of rape does not get to speak in lynching metaphors or claim his “blood” is being spilled by the press. Nuh uh.

Clinton criticizes Israel plan to raze Palestinian homes – Los Angeles Times

Clinton criticizes Israel plan to raze Palestinian homes – Los Angeles Times.

What could Israel possibly be thinking?

I’ve always wondered what the big fight is over east Jerusalem. Jerusalem belongs to all of us. I do not understand why Israel is unwilling to relinquish the eastern section, which if I remember it correctly is already predominately, if not entirely, composed of Arab residents.

List of rocket and mortar attacks in Israel in 2008 – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

January 2nd, 2009 [General, Middle East, War & Peace]

List of rocket and mortar attacks in Israel in 2008.

So like… just how many are they expected to tolerate before retaliation is finally allowed? Bear in mind that Israel is TINY – not much larger than Riverside County, or about 1/3 – 1/2 the size of San Bernardino County. It’s not a large country. So tell me – how many rockets does this tiny country less than half the size of the fucking 909 have to put up with before it’s allowed to fight back without people accusing it of being a big bad imperialist?

Israelis strike homes of 2 top Hamas figures; at least 1 killed – CNN.com

January 1st, 2009 [General, Middle East]

Israelis strike homes of 2 top Hamas figures; at least 1 killed – CNN.com.

Rayan had urged Gazans not to abandon their homes during the Israeli air attacks, even if they received threats to evacuate, Arab media reported.

Well isn’t that nice. Israel goes out of its way to warn Gaza civilians of impending strikes so as to reduce the loss of life, and this Hamas leader essentially goes, “No, no, stay in your house. You know, so we can blame Israel when you die in the airstrike…”

Rocket kills 2 children after Gaza border reopens – CNN.com

January 1st, 2009 [General, Middle East]

Will Hamas find a way to blame this one on Israel as well? Israel opened the borders to humanitarian aid, and what did the militants do? They kept firing rockets into Israel – even if some of them didn’t make it all the way there. Surprise? No. A damned shame? Yes. These children are proof that these militants have little regard for the lives of the people around them, even while they claim to be fighting for them.

JERUSALEM (CNN) — A rocket fired by Palestinian militants fell on a Gaza home and killed two children, Palestinian sources said Friday, the same day Israel opened three Gaza border crossings for the first time in 10 days.

Palin may “support” Israel, but she is no friend to Jews.

October 11th, 2008 [Election 2008, General, Law & Politics, Middle East, News, Religion, US]

With friends like Sarah Palin, who needs enemies?! I would rather see somebody supporting Israel by trying to further peace in the Middle East, rather than supporting Israel blindly in the hopes that the resulting wars will bring about the End of Days just a little bit sooner, or because as long as Israel holds out, there’s still a chance all the Jews will move there and either accept Jesus or die.

I don’t want this woman anywhere near the international peace process – or the proverbial “red button.” Religion is a personal matter, but not when her religious motivations will guide her every move in office. A religious politician – EVERY politician, really – has to have some level of humility; as we’ve seen from the past 8 years, when an official believes he has God’s mandate to rule and has been placed there to do God’s work and have God speak through him… well… I think we know how well that goes.

Does Sarah Palin Have a Pentecostal Problem? – TIME:

And finally, a videotape surfaced of a 2005 service at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church, the Pentecostal church that Palin attended for most of her life. In the scene captured on video, Palin stands at the front of the sanctuary while a visiting African pastor prays that God will help her gubernatorial campaign and protect her “from every form of witchcraft.” Later in the same service, the pastor complains that “Israelites” held too many prominent positions in business, a comment that has further alienated Jewish voters.

Sarah Palin And The Anti-Semitism Question – The Jed Report:

Yesterday, Ben Smith posted a remarkable story about Sarah Palin’s attendance at an anti-Semitic sermon delivered at her church just two weeks ago.

The sermon, given by the executive director of Jews for Jesus, blamed Jewish victims of terrorism for the attacks which claimed their lives. If Jews had just converted to Christianity, he said, they would have lived.

This is crazy, paranoid stuff, and it is far beyond anything Jeremiah Wright ever said, yet we went through six weeks of nonstop scrutiny over his politically extreme statements.

Sarah Palin and the Jewish community | Op-Ed Contributors | Jerusalem Post:

FINALLY, THERE is the matter of two anti-Israel politicians – Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan. In February Palin in an interview lavished praise on Ron Paul. There is also a controversy over whether Palin has supported former presidential aspirant Pat Buchanan. To be fair there is no evidence that Palin shares either of these Republicans’ anti-Israel creed. However, since the beginning of the GOP narrative within the Jewish community is that Obama can not be trusted because of a handful of people who have endorsed him. If this guilt by association standard is one the McCain stands by, then they also need to deal with Palin’s past support for anti-Israel politicians.

Sarah Palin’s Jewish Problem – Michael Fox – Open Salon:

In his talk at Wasilla on August 17, 2008, with Palin in the audience, Brickner described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" on Jews who have not converted to Christianity.

At the conclusion of Brickner's sermon, the congregation contributed money for Jews for Jesus' mission of converting
the Jews and and prayed that Jews would come to accept Jesus.

John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate has already cost him the vote of at least one prominent Jewish politician — former New York City Mayor Ed Koch.

Koch, who endorsed George W. Bush in 2004, said that McCain’s choice of Palin has led him to endorse Barack Obama.

    “She’s scary,” Koch said.

NY Times: Seizing the Day in Tel Aviv

July 21st, 2008 [General, Middle East, Travel]

I would love to go back to Israel again some day, and this NY Times article on Tel Aviv is definitely a reminder that I need to go again some time soon! (Last time I visited was 1994!)

    Celebrating murder

July 18th, 2008 [General, Middle East, News, War & Peace]

How can we believe a nation wants peace when it gives a hero’s welcome to a man who deliberately bashed in the head of a toddler?

CNN reports that Kuntar vowed to keep fighting for the “liberation of the Palestinian territories.” Right. I’m SO sure he referred only to “territories.” Bullshit. I’d be willing to bet he referred to the entire land of Israel.
